"To ease, through prayer, the burden of cancer on individuals, their loved ones and the community and to pray that the day will come quickly when all cancers can be prevented or cured."

Press release 2010

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral

Sunday 10th October

3 pm

Lady Grace Sheppard will be the main speaker at this year's Pause for Hope service in Liverpool Anglican cathedral on Sunday 10th October (3 pm). Lady Sheppard who is currently undergoing treatment for recurrent cancer, will be speaking six years to the day since her husband Bishop David Sheppard addressed the same service shortly before he died from cancer.

Major Michael Highton of the Salvation Army and Canon Anthony O'Brien, Dean of the Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool, will be assisting at this ecumenical service

Individuals involved with many of the cancer organisations on Merseyside come together once a year for a service for those with cancer and those who look after them at home or in hospital, for those with responsibility for allocating and managing resources and for scientists working in cancer research.

Music will be provided by the cathedral choir and by the choir of Bishop Eton Primary School. Children from the choir will be reading the Bidding Prayers and these will be interspersed with reflective guitar music by Dave Flynn.

Maureen Walsh from  Radio Merseyside, who has also suffered from cancer, will give the scripture reading.

The Liverpool Echo has been running a Poetry competition on the theme Hope from the Heart and the winners of this will read their poems during the service.

The Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, the Mayors of Sefton, Wirral, Knowsley, West Lancs and the Deputy Mayor of St Helens will be in attendance together with the High Sheriff of Merseyside, the Leader of Liverpool City Council, Mr Joe Anderson, the Chief Constable of Merseyside, Mr Jon Murphy,  representatives of the Ambulance and Fire and Rescue Services and Dr Rosemary Gillespie, chief executive of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation..
